This Saturday teams from around the country came to Weston-super-Mare to take part in our first Beach Football Tournament.
The tournament was great fun with some great football being played by all.
The early leaders were local team Banwell Beach Boys who beat all who came before them on the way to topping the table at the end of the group stages. With injuries and ‘Saturday chores’ robbing them of players however they had to drop out before the semi-finals which left the team from Southampton playing FC Farcelona in one match, the other being contested by Cutters Friday ‘A’ against Cutters Friday ‘B’.
It was Southampton who made it into the final, winning that 3-0 after a fantastic game which saw a final breakaway goal sealing the win after Cutters sent all their players forward to try and get back into the match.
After the final, teams headed back to Raddy’s Bar for food and a presentation of the trophy before heading off for their own celebrations or for the long drive home.
Feedback was good from teams, the only real complaint being that players feet hurt as the games were all played in bare feet!
A great pre-season fitness booster, playing on the sand really gets the blood pumping and the legs aching, and with some friendly teams and a good atmosphere, the tournament is one that is sure to grow and continue for a long time to come.
We are already looking at next years event. We are planning an earlier date, probably early July to try and catch the sunshine, which was patchy at best this weekend! The date will be released as soon as we have it. Online and postal entries will open at that point too so get some friends together and get down the beach and start practicing!
Thanks to all the teams for a great day, and thanks to Paul at Raddy’s for the food and hospitality after the tournament. Also a huge thanks must go to Matt and Steve for refereeing all day, before rushing off for their teams final pre-season friendly in the afternoon!
See you next year
